Ancient History Portfolio Junior ages 5-8

I finally got my AHPJ in and here is the requested review:

AHPJ is in a 3 ring binder that has a horizontal layout. There is plenty of space to add your own pages to the binder. The pages are of heavy duty card stock making them very durable. All you would need to complete the portfolio is scissors, crayons and glue. Downfall-if you are using SOTW AB you will have to put all the AB pages in sideways.

It uses 14 chapters of SOTW 1. The chapters used are not in order, but you could easily put them in SOTW order and just not study it by units.

The first unit studied is Ancient Near East. It does not line up with SOTW at all. It is the most confusing unit. I think you would have to have the suggested books for it to make sense. It studies the 7 day creation story, ancient tools, roman numerals and weaving. I’m guessing that this unit in the regular portfolio is a more in-depth study. The rest of the units go with SOTW quite well.

AHPJ has a Bibliography that gives you suggested books to read for each activity. About one third of the suggestions are also suggested in SOTW AB making lining-up the curriculum easy.

Activities in the portfolio include: Lap books, coloring, map work, cross word puzzles, fill in the blank, word searches, cutting and pasting, mazes, pop-ups and an end of the year bingo game review.

There are 3 levels of difficulty. Level 1 does a lot of cutting and pasting with writing vocabulary words. Level 2 is mostly copy work and level 3 involves a lot of narration. An older student (8 or 9) that liked doing the cutting and pasting could easily do every level activity. You would just have to add blank card stock to the book to glue the cutting and pasting activities on. I couldn’t imagine an older child not wanting to do all the hand on activities.

AHPJ did not have a concordance so I created one. I hope this helps you to have a better understanding of what is in the book. I printed this out and added it to mine.
